The following are the minumum legal requirements for getting auto insurance in California:

· Minimum bodily injury liability per person in an accident: $15,000

· Minimum bodily injury liability per accident: $30,000

· Minimum liability for property damage in an accident: $5,000

· Uninsured motorist coverage is NOT required

· California is NOT a “no-fault” state

You’re considered a “preferred risk” driver if you can answer yes to the following questions:

· No accidents or moving violations in the last 3 years

· No license suspensions or major violations

· Continuous insurance with no lapse or terminations

· Age: 25 years old or more.

You’re considered a “standard risk” driver if you can answer yes to the following questions:

· 1 moving violation or 1 “at-fault” accident with property damage only in the last 3 years

· No license suspensions or major violations

· Age: 21 years old or more.

You’re considered a “high risk” driver if you have one or more of these characteristics:

· 2 or more moving violations or 1 or more “at fault” accidents involving injury in the last 3 years

· License suspensions, major violations

· Lapses in insurance coverage

· 18-21 years old
