Always remember, flood and earthquake insurance are not covered by a standard homeowners policy.

You will need to ask for and get separate quotes for flood or earthquake insurance, as they are not part of a normal homeowners insurance policy.

If you buy a home in a designated flood area, you will have to buy a separate flood insurance policy.  The lender will usually require flood insurance to fund a loan for your home if you are in a flood area.  A separate flood insurance policy will cost on average about $400 per year.

Just like flood insurance, earthquake insurance is also a separate policy.  Some companies have their own earthquake coverage that can be added to the homeowner policy, but most Insurance companies in California use the California Earthquake Authority, which is a state sponsored earthquake insurance program.

There are a few insurance companies that specialize in selling earthquake insurance.  If you need flood or earthquake insurance talk to your insurance agent.  Your agent will discuss your options for your particular insurance needs.
