Snow and ice accumulation can damage natural gas meters and outdoor appliances such as barbecues and water heaters.  To prevent potential damage or insurance claims:

  • Install a shelter above your natural gas meter to prevent snow or ice accumulation.
  • Use a broom, not a shovel to clear snow or ice off natural gas meters and outdoor appliances.
  • Keep outside gutters free of leaves and debris.

Every winter homeowners suffer from the destruction and financial burden caused by freezing bursting water pipes.

During the winter, if you are going to be away from your mountain home for more than a day, winterization steps should be followed.

  • One rule is to leave the thermostat at 50 to 55.  This doesn’t always work, but it is one alternative.
  • Know where your shut-off valve is and turn it off should you leave your home for a number of days.   Drain indoor plumbing by opening all faucets until the water stops, flush toilets and add biodegradable anti-freeze into all toilet bowls.
  • Insulate pipes and faucets.
  • Shut off and drain outdoor irrigation systems.  That should be done around November 1 and remain shut-off until April 1st.
