That’s correct using a hand-held cell phone while driving will be prohibited by law in California effective July 1, 2008.  

Violators will be fined $20 for the first offence and $50 for each additional offence.

The only exceptions made are for 911 emergency calls and truck drivers.

The subject of Cell phone use while driving is a controversy, but the fact remains that driving requires concentration, and talking on the phone and using a hand-held device is distracting.

Statistics show that there have been a large number of accidents when using a hand-held cell phone. 

The answer to this is to use a hands-free device.

If you need talk to someone, to be safe you should pull over to the side of the road or let someone in the car do the talking for you.
