An insured called and asked if they can remove a car from their insurance policy.

The question is not as simple as it seems.  In California, we now have mandatory laws that dictate you must insure an owned vehicle, even if its parked and never used.

The way to get around this is to file a non-operational permit with the Department of Motor Vehicles.

If you file the application, you will not be required to have insurance on the vehicle.  But, keep in mind, you must have the vehicle off the road and stored.

A lot of people will just remove the vehicle from the policy and get fined for not filing the non-operational form.

My article is intended to educate you so that this does not happen.

When you decide to use the vehicle again call and add the vehicle back on the policy and remove the non-operational status of the vehicle with the DMV.

Now, if you want to remove your vehicle because you sold it, you still need to wait until the sales transaction is complete and the vehicle is no longer in your possession before you remove it.
